Profile - Kathleen Mir

Auntie Kath Mir was Cottage Mother for her Hudson boys from 1958 through to 1964. Kath was a fair dinkum, non-nonsense lady who was loved and respected by her charges throughout the six years she was in Hudson. Her youngest son Michael also lived in Hudson and lived as any other Fairbridge boy did, whilst her two older sons - Brian and Ted - remained in Perth.

Kath was noted for personal generosity and old boys remember her buying items for her boys, including shoes, from her own money.

After leaving Fairbridge Kath moved to Bentley, a suburb of Perth, and her family home became a focal point in the lives of many an Old-Fairbridgian, indeed her open door made this place home for many of the old boys for varying stretches of time. Any of her old charges dropping in were always welcomed with open arms and her house could almost be described as the Hudson of Perth.

This kindness was incredibly important in the lives of those Old Fairbridgians who had no family of their own in Australia therefore giving them a home-base and a sense of belonging. It also helped keep alive the strong spirit of the Hudson clan from the days back on the Farm.

Kath was a popular figure at the annual Old Fairbridgian re-unions at the Farm. An 80th birthday celebration was planned for her but sadly she passed away before that occurred. On her 80th birthday many of her old boys gathered at the Farm to pay their last respects. She is remembered in the Church Memorial Gardens.
